The Australian National Botanic Gardens is a Commonwealth reserve under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The Gardens are managed by the Director of National Parks in accordance with the EPBC Act, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000 (Cth) (EPBC Regulations) and the Australian National Botanic Gardens Management Plan 2012.
Certain activities undertaken in the Gardens will need approval from the Director of National Parks under the EPBC Act or the EPBC Regulations.
Scientific research
Permits
To conduct scientific research in the gardens you will need to apply for a permit. If the research activity requires access to biological resources for commercial purposes, a $50 application fee will apply and the applicant will be required to enter into an access and benefit sharing agreement.

Commercial events
Licences
To conduct commercial events in the Australian National Botanic Gardens you will need to apply for a licence. Commercial events include corporate dining experiences, festivals and markets, sports events, and weddings. A $200 application fee applies to all commercial event licence applications.

Commercial tourism
Licences
To conduct commercial tours in the Australian National Botanic Gardens you will need to apply for a licence. Commercial tours can include bushwalking tours or other forms of commercial tourism. Licence applications for commercial tourism activities have no application fee.
Other activities
Permits
A permit may be required for other activities that are not listed above, including non-commercial gatherings of 15 people or more. Please contact the Gardens to discuss whether you need approval to conduct your activity. Permit applications for other activities have no application fee.

Management Plan
The Australian National Botanic Gardens are currently managed under the Australian National Botanic Gardens Management Plan 2012-2022. The management plan outlines the broad goals and conservation values of the gardens, as well as the activities that can be carried out within the Gardens with the approval of the Director of National Parks.
